As human beings, there is a slight discomfort to the realization that God is a mind-reader. He knows those opinions that we don’t share and knows the sins that we commit in our hearts. We can deceive the entire world, but we can’t deceive Him. In a world that frowns upon intrusion into declared personal spaces, it is an uncomfortable fact to dwell upon.
As children of God who walk diligently with Him, we welcome His abiding knowledge of our thoughts as a power that will keep us in check. We know that His Spirit will stir our consciences when our thoughts begin to go in the wrong direction or when we sin against Him. We are grateful that our spirits can be troubled up to the point that we just have to run back to God and make our peace with Him.
As children of God who have taken refuge in Him, we also welcome His power over the thoughts of our enemies! He knows how they slander us to others, He knows their plots to harm us and he knows how they have damaged our reputations. It is a great source of comfort to know that He sees it all. It is bliss to understand that when we entrust any matter to Him, He will handle the issue at His own precise timing and in His own preferred way.
He may make us aware of their thoughts and plots so we can be wary of them and seek His help (Jeremiah); He may actively interfere with their plots and deliver us (Ps.31:4, Ps.91:3, Ps.141:9); He may actively interfere with their plots and turn it around upon their heads (Ps.57:6, Ps.141:10, Prov.26:27); He may let them implement their plans and turn it around for our good, thus shaming them (Joseph); He may turn their thoughts towards us into peaceful thoughts because our ways are pleasing to Him (Prov.16:7). He will do exactly what He wants – for the good of our souls and the glory of His name.
God informed Jeremiah of the plots of his detractors and he in turn asked God to let him witness the vengeance that would come upon them because he entrusted the matter to Him (Jeremiah 11:18-20). It is God’s wish that we always entrust the actions of our detractors to Him and leave Him to deal with them. He clearly declared that vengeance is His sole prerogative (Romans 12:19).
Our duty is to cast our worries, cares and fears upon God because we know how powerful He is. Our duty is to ask for grace to enable us pray for our enemies because Christ insists that we do so. When we can no longer bear it, our duty is to report our detractors and those who disturb our souls to God because we know He can read their minds and He can also change their hearts. He can choose to have mercy upon them or choose to judge them severely. Our duty is to file a report with God and leave Him to be the Arbitrator, Judge, Executor and Enforcer. We do so with the full confidence that He will always act upon that report.
