By the Word of the LORD the heavens were made, and by the breath of His mouth all their lights. Let all the earth fear the LORD; Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him. For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood firm. Ps. 33:6,8-9
The nobleman whose son was dying in the Gospel of John (Chp. 5:46-54), believed Christ’s Word of healing BEFORE he and his entire household came to believe in Christ. Let’s be clear, he believed in the Word spoken by Christ before coming to believe in the Speaker of the Word.
He had approached him because he had heard about his multiple miracles and probably seen the evidence himself. He had nothing to lose by asking. He believed Christ’s proclamation of healing. He did not argue with logic or plead for concrete evidence. He turned around to go home and confirmed while still traveling that the healing occurred at the moment those Words were spoken.
We who believe in Christ have a leg up on this nobleman. We have faith, we have hope, we are already members of the Body of Christ. Christ’s Word is readily available for us to meditate upon. We have immediate access to Him and can ask Him in prayer to take care of our concerns. Perhaps, He will rebuke us first as He did to the royal official. Perhaps, He will test us first. Just like the nobleman, we will not be deterred from our plea.
We are convinced that as we prayerfully meditate on His Word, He will hear us and give us an answer of peace. We may not know exactly how He will take care of our pressing concerns. We just trust that God’s mighty Spirit is ready upon being asked, to apply the power of His Word to any situation concerning us that needs to be made whole. We trust that when Christ says, “Peace, be still” to our disturbing circumstance from heaven, it is immediately stilled here on earth.
If the Word of God could be trusted to be powerful enough to bring about a positive change by a heathen in desperate need, it should be trusted by the Followers of Christ in all our needs. May the performance of God’s Word in our lives deepen our faith and increase our peace. May it give us testimonies that will bring those who are still unbelievers around us into the family of God. Amen.
