If we could get a glimpse of the reverence that the angels in heaven have for the voice of God’s Word, their prompt obedience to it and the haste to perform it, (Psalm 103:20-21), we would kick ourselves for not making the understanding of His Word a priority in our lives.
“For You have magnified Your word above all Your name.” Psalm 138:2
We refer to God by many names, all based upon His attributes. Holy God, Merciful God, loving God, Righteous God, Almighty God, you name it. Yet, the God who is the pioneer among all those who say their word is their bond, declares His faithfulness to His Word to be sovereign over all His glorious attributes. This makes sense, since all the attributes are actually derived from His promises and truths.
Heaven and earth, and all the attributes of God manifested in them shall pass away, but the Word of God shall never perish. We are therefore not surprised that the Messiah He sent to earth to reconcile us to Him, Jesus Christ, is known as the Incarnate Word. It could not be any less, given His sovereignty over all of God’s creation and the uttermost importance of the mission to be accomplished.
We would be doing our souls a whole lot of good by digging deeper into Scripture during our Lenten journey. This is where we get to know God and grow in intimacy with Him, guided by His Spirit. As pilgrims travelling on this earth, His Word is our GPS for our daily walk as well as our 911(emergency number) telephone. It reveals His attributes to us and bestows His wisdom upon us. It changes us gradually and sets us apart. No wonder it was one of the last requests Jesus made to His Father before His ultimate sacrifice. “Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” John 17:17.
P/S: Author’s note – I have found Psalm 119 to be very useful in explaining the importance and role of God’s Word in a believer’s life.
