Lent 2021: Day 2- Soul Matters

One sign of Christian maturity is when a person gets that God, even as He is our Creator, Preserver and Protector, is more interested in the health and well-being of our souls than our physical presence. It was for the salvation of our souls that His Son, Jesus Christ, died.

It is the hope that our souls will be joining the hosts in heaven at our appointed times that gives us unexplainable peace and joy, even when the world around us is collapsing. There is a reason why the man whose soul is disturbed, manifests that disturbance in his physical life.

Once we get this, once we understand that a Father who gave up His Son to a cruel death for the sake of winning our souls back to Him, will do everything to preserve what His Son has won, we will begin to make our daily decisions in a more nuanced manner.

We will gradually learn to consider every choice we make in the light of what is good for our souls, having been consecrated to Christ. The prospect of losing our souls, knowing how grievious this would be to our heavenly Father, would fill us with dread. The happiness of our souls will overshadow any secular concerns.

The value of the physical life will one day be no more. Placing a priority on it over the value of a precious soul that lives on is ignorance at best, and foolishness at worst. This is not to minimize the care and work necessary for progressing in, maintaining and enjoying the physical life, after all, it is a blessing from God. We just have to keep remembering that all our gains in life must be secondary to and subject to the health of our redeemed and consecrated souls.

19 I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; – Deuteronomy 30:19.

Everyday, we will have numerous opportunities to make choices that will enhance the life of Christ or hasten the death of righteousness in our souls. With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, may we always make the right choices. Amen.
