The Hug That Was Felt Around The Globe.

Many have probably moved on from that unbelievable moment, the implications of an unlikely, spontaneous hug of forgiveness consigned to history. Perhaps a few people sought to emulate such nobility and were the better for it. Others gave up before they could even consider the first name on their list of offenders. “I could never do that” seemed to be a common reaction. At that moment, the young man seemed to be better that 98 percent of humanity.

Yes, it was surreal and moving. Brandt Jean spoke eloquently about forgiving his brother’s killer, if she was truly sorry for what she had done. In that statement, he toed the line of his Lord and Savior, salvation is indeed based on repentance, and a willingness to be renewed. He then requested permission to hug the person whose action took the life of his only brother…..and proceeded to do just that.

If most of us believe that we would never be able to do this while walking in his shoes, we are probably correct. Without knowing this remarkable man, I want to go out on a limb and say that he is not a newbie in the grace-fueled business of forgiving. Chances are that he probably started by forgiving bullies in elementary school and trusted friends who hurt him. Chances are that he has been asking for, and utilizing the grace of forgiveness for everyday hurts and disappointments since he was a little lad.

Chances are that he has been consistently faithful to the little graces he has been given to forgive smaller offences, and our Merciful God has been increasing that grace in him incrementally. Faithfulness in little things leads to faithfulness in greater things. If that be the case, then it is certain that whenever this young man slips and sins, God forgives him even before he asks for forgiveness. Wow! What a blissful and reassuring thought this must be for him, to be forgiven exactly the way he forgives others. What does this say for the rest of us? We are forgiven the way we forgive others. The thought of God holding a grudge against me is truly frightening.

This young man, who was just 17 when his only big brother was killed, has preached with his actions what many anointed ministers have not been able to get across effectively from the pulpit. We are reminded about the numerous examples in scripture, of God using the weakest people for great purposes, filling them with an abundance of grace. Yes, it has come at a great cost to him and his family, but let him who dares to question the sovereignty of God take that up with God. Let him who would rather refuse to cooperate with God’s purpose identify himself and stand up to God. All our lives are in God’s hands and He will fulfill His purpose for His Kingdom, whether we like it or not.

May we ask for the grace to be faithful in the small and easy things, so that we can grow in grace and be ready to withstand the difficult days in life. May the Holy Spirit enlighten our minds to the wisdom of God’s Word and give us the courage to make choices that reflect said wisdom. May the soul of Botham Jean rest in perfect peace and may his family be continually strengthened and protected by divine mercy. Amen.
