Happy Mother’s Day 2019!!
While searching The Psaltery for scripture to use in praying for children this Mother’s Day weekend, I was struck by how most of the verses I wanted to use were preceded by a common requirement – The Fear of God. Please join me in meditating upon these verses. May God bless us with the grace of filial fear (as opposed to servile fear). May He incline us to stand upon His Word, cooperate with His Spirit, and watch Him perform these promises in our lives and the lives of our children. Amen.
- Ps. 25:12-14. Who is the man who fears the Lord? He will instruct him in the way he should choose. 13 His soul will abide in prosperity, And his descendants will inherit the land. 14 The secret of the Lord is for those who fear Him, and He will make them know His covenant.
- Ps. 90:16. Who understands the power of Your anger And Your fury, according to the fear that is due You? 12 So teach us to number our days, That we may present to You a heart of wisdom. 13 Do return, O Lord; how long will it be? And be sorry for Your servants. 14 O satisfy us in the morning with Your lovingkindness, That we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. 15 Make us glad according to the days You have afflicted us, And the years we have seen evil. 16 Let Your work appear to Your servants And Your majesty to their children.
- Ps. 103:17-18. But the lovingkindness of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, And His righteousness to children’s children, 18 To those who keep His covenant And remember His precepts to do them.
- Ps. 112:1-2. Praise the Lord! How blessed is the man who fears the Lord, Who greatly delights in His commandments. 2 His descendants will be mighty on earth; The generation of the upright will be blessed.
- Ps. 115:11-15. You who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord; He is their help and their shield. 12 The Lord has been mindful of us; He will bless us; He will bless the house of Israel; He will bless the house of Aaron. 13 He will bless those who fear the Lord, The small together with the great. 14 May the Lord give you increase, You and your children.
- Ps. 147:11-13. The Lord favors those who fear Him, Those who wait for His lovingkindness. 12 Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem! Praise your God, O Zion! 13 For He has strengthened the bars of your gates; He has blessed your sons within you.
- Ps. 128: How blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, Who walks in His ways. 2 When you shall eat of the fruit of your hands, You will be happy and it will be well with you. 3 Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine within your house, Your children like olive plant around your table. 4 Behold, for thus shall the man be blessed who fears the Lord. 5 The Lord bless you from Zion, And may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life. 6 Indeed, may you see your children’s children.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, we bless you on this Mother’s Day for the privilege of motherhood. We come before your Throne of Grace to plead for mercy for ourselves and our children. Where we have fallen short of your precepts, please have mercy on us and forgive us. Bless us with the grace of filial fear and a mind-set that never wants to disappoint you because of the love and mercy you have shown us and our children.
On this day, we stand upon your promises and beg you in the name of Jesus to perform your word in our lives. Let your mercy meet your truth in your word and release an outpouring of graces upon us, our children and our mothers.
Because we have promised to fear you Lord, show us your secrets and let our descendants inherit the land. Because you are faithful to your promises, Let Your works appear to us Your servants And Your majesty to our children. Because your word does not return to you void, let your righteousness be our children’s and our grandchildren’s portion and let our descendants be mighty on this earth. Because you favor those who fear you, give us and our children increase and bless our children within us. Because you honor your word and your name above all, bless our children to become as flourishing olive plants around our table, and bless us with the privilege of seeing all our children’s children.
Almighty and loving Father, we beg you to perform all these promises of yours in our families today. If you were to judge our actions and thoughts, none would stand in your sight. But we appeal to your mercy through the Blood of Jesus and we put all our trust in that Divine Mercy. Protect our children and deliver them from all the tricks and snares of the enemy in this present age. Bless them with your Holy Spirit and incline them to stay on your path of life. May they be victorious in all their struggles and may those victories glorify your name through Jesus. Amen.
Thank you Father! You are truly a faithful Promise-Keeper!!
Happy Mother’s Day!!!
