Lent Day 18: Bless The Lord, O My Soul!!

A much beloved verse,  Psalm 103:1 is a deep yearning of gratitude and praise that goes beyond the ordinary. It is not enough to bless the Lord with the mouth, hands, feet or any part of the mortal flesh. That is a good mode of thanks, but this God who proves to me everyday that it is because of Him and in the power of His Spirit that I live, move and have my being deserves worship beyond the usual.

So I will command my immortal soul to bless and praise Him. I will suppress my body and ask all my senses to take part in this orchestra of praise. I imagine myself getting a brief audience with the King of kings, what can I offer as a gift? How do I express gratitude for EVERYTHING in the little time I have; how can I even remember everything? How can I get every bit, body, soul and spitit, of me to express a merited gratitude? The Psalmist seems to suggest I can live a life of perpetual thanksgiving by  directing my being, my life, my senses, my thoughts upwards all the time.

Perhaps the 18th century minister, John Stevenson, may have best captured the imagery of how all that is within a person could bless God. He writes:

  • Let your conscience bless the Lord by unwavering fidelity
  • Let your judgment bless Him, by decisions in accordance with His Word
  • Let your imaginations bless Him, by pure and holy musings
  • Let your affections praise Him, by loving whatsoever He loves
  • Let your desires bless Him, by seeking only His glory
  • Let your memory bless Him by not forgetting any of His blessings
  • Let your thoughts bless Him, by meditating on His excellencies
  • Let your hope praise Him, by longing and looking for the glory that is to be revealed
  • Let your every sense bless Him by its fealty; your every word by its truth;  and your every act by its integrity.

There can be nothing left to add here. Perhaps we can call it The 9-Point Road Map to Blessing God in Everything.

We pray: Lord, You alone see my heart and my desire to bless You in all that I do. Please help me……..
