If we really believe our bodies are the temples of the Holy Spirit as detailed in Scripture, then we should be somewhat concerned when meditating on the gospel passages that describe the only recorded episode of Christ’s anger – the desecration of the temple by money changers and merchants who sold animals.
If Jesus was unable to tolerate the presence of corruption and monetized religion in the temple, how much more will God tolerate our continuous disrespect for the Spirit’s presence in us? Will He overturn the conflicted tables in our lives that desecrate His temple so that our thoughts and actions may be an act of respectful worship of His Presence dwelling in us?
I think He will. He demands holiness, and gave us His Son for a fresh start and His Spirit to help us on the path to holiness. He will deal with the corrupting influences, over and over until we become obedient sheep.
Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?
If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for the temple of God, which you are, is holy. 1 Corinthians 3:16-17
