I am often sad and bewildered to hear those Preachers who focus on the blessings and promises of the Christian faith and gloss over the crosses that come with it. Truth is, the costs in this relationship run both ways. Jesus paid a hefty price for our salvation and part of the response to that sacrifice is the expectation that we also bear our own crosses as and when they come.
Our costs could include: A supression of our natural desires and passions, subjugating them to the wishes of Jesus; Permanent vigilance against our temptations and the enemy’s snares; Service and building up the Body of Christ through our faith communities; Slander and rejection from associates, friends or family. Some even pay the ultimate price, the cost of their lives.
Yes, Christianity does not come cheap and it was not designed to be easy. What we do have reassurance about is His GRACE available upon asking to help us to bear our costs. Whatever we give up or lose for the sake of Christ, be they material, be they relationships, will amount to nothing compared to the glory that lies ahead.
