Employee, Employer; Master, Servant; Boss, Subordinate….titles in this world. Thy Kingdom Come, we pray everyday in The Lord’s Prayer. Well, in this kingdom that we seek to replicate in our hearts everyday, titles mean nothing. We are all fellow servants in the kingdom of God answering to the One True Boss. Whatever our circumstance in life is at the moment, we are urged to work as if God is our direct supervisor. We believe as redeemed and consecrated Christians, that our present occupation at this time is where He wills us and has orchestrated for us to be, He is the one pulling the strings.
Diligence then means that we learn to look beyond our visible earthly bosses and focus on God as the origin/source of the job, and therefore the one we want to impress with our attitude and productivity. We perform our duties in the fear of God. This helps us to accommodate and look beyond the cranky or mean bosses, and prevents us from idolizing or glorifying the kind and understanding bosses, even as we definitely appreciate them.
This also means that as bosses or business owners, we work in our corner suites with an acute sense of awareness that there is a Big Boss monitoring our every move, and we will account to Him for our performance in that role. We commend good work and reward great effort, knowing that our Big Boss appreciates our good intentions and rewards those who diligently seek Him. We treat people as fairly as we want to be treated, even though we can never match God in fairness or mercy. We reprimand and discipline gently when neccessary, knowing that our Father also corrects and punishes those he loves. In reprimanding, we separate the offence from the offender and avoid personal attacks knowing that God always loves us but hates our sins.
Diligence – doing our work with an eye to God in everything, striving to impress God, no matter what our status on this earth is.
Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as to Christ; 6Not with eye-service, as men pleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; 7With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men: 8Knowing that whatever good thing any man does, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free. 9And, you masters, do the same things to them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him – Ephesians 6:5-9
