Psalm 16: 1Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge. 2I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.” 3I say of the holy people who are in the land,
“They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.” 4Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more. I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods or take up their names on my lips. 5Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure. 6The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance. 7I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. 8I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. 9Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, 10because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay. 11You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand
Today’s Three Pearls
- Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge- v.1: Taking refuge under the shadow of God’s wings, knowing that any wicked arrow aimed my way has to part the feathers on those wings to find my secure location. Feeling safe and confident in my hiding place but knowing that occasionally, God will hide His face and allow my faith and strength to be tried. He will from time to time seek to prove my patience, to see if I have made progress in my faith journey and can plough through any trial at hand with the spiritual armor and weaponry available to me or whether I’ve just been paying lip service to my walk with Him. For faith is the golden rule for dispensing favors from heaven. And even in good times, not becoming complacent but continually taking refuge in Jesus the Rock of Ages cleft for me, constantly being filled with the Mercy that pours out from His side. Realizing that I am nothing without that Grace and Mercy. I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing – v.2
- Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup;…surely I have a delightful inheritance – v.5-6: Having received righteousness from Christ and being a co-heir with Him, (having shared in His sufferings and looking forward to sharing in His glory – Rom:8:17); I have inherited the attributes of God and the promises made to the righteous. These promises, the riches of the covenant of grace, are available and maintained for me by God Himself. I am expected to develop these seeds planted in me and use them; I need to stop acting like an unwelcome step-child or or a mere child by virtue of creation, to stop being hesitant and unsure…..I need to begin to think and behave like a bona-fide adopted child of the First Family and begin to put my resources to good use for my Father’s glory. Yes! That mighty God is my Papa, MINE!!!
- You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand – v.11: If there is anything we need to remind ourselves everyday, it is that we are pilgrims in this world. We are sojourners making our way back to God day by day, avoiding the landmines set by the enemy on the roads of the uncharted territory we sometimes find ourselves on. How do we get back to our Source, to the God that created us, at the end of our journey? By seeking the path of life He mapped out for each person when He gave us life. On each person’s individual path of life, there will be joys and sorrows, but at the journey’s end, we enter into unlimited joy and eternal pleasures.
