Psalm 14: 1The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good. 2The Lord looks down from heaven on all mankind
to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God. 3All have turned away, all have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one. 4Do all these evildoers know nothing? They devour my people as though eating bread; they never call on the Lord. 5But there they are, overwhelmed with dread, for God is present in the company of the righteous. 6You evildoers frustrate the plans of the poor, but the Lord is their refuge. 7Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion! When the Lord restores his people, let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!
Today’s Three Pearls
- The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” – v.1 :Is it possible that this is not referring to the professed atheist but rather one who professes God with his lips but whose heart and therefore actions are contrary to everything God stands for? Is the fool described here just another term for a hypocrite? Is this fool the skeptic who is beginning to doubt God’s existence? Or is it the confirmed atheist who views the life of the Christian purchased by the Blood of the Lamb as restrictive and limiting; who would rather live in the freedom of his own rules and therefore denies the existence of God so as to enjoy his free life? If we consider all three groups above, we understand how wide the net is, why corruption and vile deeds are common and why ‘there is no one who does good’, not even one – v.3. May Grace keep us in the path of righteousness.
- The Lord looks down from heaven on all mankind to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God – v.2: This sounds sad, after all He created us for His purpose. He yearns for us to really get to know Him and understand Him. Like anyone who does not like a friend that only seeks him when in need, He wishes we could make it a priority to seek Him just for who He is; to seek Him first before every thing else that we want; to seek Him fervently and constantly; to seek to know Him better by spending time studying His character. Everything else shall be added unto this primary desire of God….
- Do all these evildoers know nothing? – v.4: It is indeed foolishness and recklessness to know the wages of sin and persist in it. It is only ignorance that can explain the lack of a holy fear and lack of reverence that the ungodly have that makes them not to flee from a consciously sinful life. Even the devil and his cohorts are not that foolish, they acknowledge a day of judgement :“What do you want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?” – Matt.8:29. How it makes the Lord sad to see His people perish for lack of knowledge.
