Psalm 8: 1Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens. 2Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. 3When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?c 5You have made themd a little lower than the angelse and crowned themf with glory and honor. 6You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under theirg feet: 7all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, 8the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. 9Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
Today’s Three Pearls
- Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold – v.2: Babes are humble and do not understand status! One of the biggest mistakes those who have walked far with God can make is to belittle the counsel coming from a beginner in faith, because they have not read the whole Bible or they are not yet prophesying or whatever other virtue they use to gauge their own advanced spirituality. Spiritual pride is worse than material pride because it is insidious and borders on laying a claim to the work of Grace in the individual. Paul emphasized in his epistles that the power of the gospel was not in wisdom or eloquence, but in the Spirit. God delights in causing great results from small beginnings; frequently selecting those who are weak in strength, faith, physique, and intellect to receive the Grace needed for supernatural outcomes. Once ordained, the despised become instruments of God’s service and glory.
- What is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? ..made a little lower than angers and crowned with glory and honor-v.4-5: Creatures were made, man was formed in God’s image and then inspired by God’s breath; creatures were made for service, man was made for dominion; creatures got their name from man, man got his name from God. We are consecrated to God above all things because we cost God more than all things, we cost His own Son.
- You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet – v.6: It must hurt God to see His children enslaved to things or pleasures created by man. We begin to lose authority over the things we get too fond of. God designed man to have dominion over everything and when that dominion was lost by the original sin, He sent Jesus to restore it. These worldly things that tend to distract us are great as long as we can maintain our lordship over them and not carry in our hearts that which God has placed under our feet.
